Description
1 Finsbury Avenue was completed in 1984 - the first of a three-phase office development designed by Arup Associates for Rosehaugh Greycoat Estates1. The 50 000m2 building is eight storeys high and was designed around a full-height central glazed atrium, capped with a large glazed lantern to allow occupiers to benefit from as much daylight as possible. At the same time, it was designed to be very economical in its use of energy with external shading devices to protect the building from the effects of solar gain.
A particular feature of 1 Finsbury Avenue was the design of the structure. The building has a steel frame with metal decking as permanent formwork for the concrete floors. The use of structural steelwork with sprayed fire protection allowed extremely rapid construction.
