About the Development

In 2003, Land Securities launched an open architectural competition to find a world-class architect for the development of the prestigious One New Change - and the judging panel, which included Lord Rogers, found him in the award winning architect, Jean Nouvel (64). One of the world's great modernist architects, Nouvel is recognised for his artistic integrity in employing challenging, original architecture for highly sensitive sites.

With One New Change, Nouvel continues to expand architecture's vocabulary. Both merging and contrasting with its surroundings, this world-class landmark is at once responsive to the City's urban environment and whilst different in style and materials, it respects St. Paul's monumental Renaissance presence to create an extraordinary discourse between the two buildings. It also creates a new cultural step linking such icons as the Tate Modern, the Millennium Bridge and St Paul's.

One New Change is also the City of London's largest and newest shopping destination. A dedicated entrance for One New Change office workers leads straight to the heart of London's newest retail and restaurant destination. Brands range from the luxury to the everyday: Hugo Boss to H&M, Guess to M&S. Jamie Oliver has opened a new restaurant concept in Barbecoa, while other options range from EAT to Zizzi.

The development cost was £540m and spans 550,000 sq feet over eight floors, and with this scheme, Land Securities has created the largest consolidated retail and office space in the City.

The City mall on Cheapside with its unique location next to St Paul's house saround 3,000 office workers when fully let as well as offering seven-day retail and leisure further boosting the development's appeal to local workers, residents and tourists.

The iconic building with roof terrace, designed by architect Jean Nouvel has stunning views of St Paul's. The modernist development has over 6,000 floor-to-ceiling glass panes flooding the floors with natural light. Even before its opening, One New Change scooped the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Award for mixed-use - the first time a UK development has won since 30 St Mary's Axe (The Gherkin) in 2005.

One New Change's 60 stores include Topshop, H&M and Banana Republic which also had their City debut with the new centre. Jamie Oliver's restaurant Barbecoa focuses on the art of barbequing and includes a butchers as part of the establishment. It seats 200 diners, in addition to a 40-seater bar. Gordon Ramsay's as yet unnamed restaurant will occupy 9,800 sq ft, with the main restaurant space on the first floor of the development and an entrance at the south east corner of the building where Bread and Watling Streets meet.
