Description of Sea Containers House

Sea Containers House is a 224,000sq ft office and leisure building in London SE1.

Mondrian London at Sea Containers opened here in September 2014. The hotel has a rooftop bar in a glass box structure with outdoor terrace, featuring panoramic views over London.

The interiors in 2014 were designed by British designer Tom Dixon, who wanted to capture the essence of the original building, exuding 1920s cruise ship glamour.

Sea Containers House was originally built as a hotel but became an office building in the mid-1980s.

In 2014 the extensive external and internal refurbishment of Sea Containers House was completed, including refurbished office spaces and a new, Grade-A modern office building, a high-end 356-bedroom lifestyle destination hotel as well as restaurants and cafés along the River Walkway to reinvigorate the local area.

The development that was completed in 2014 revitalised and opened up public areas around the building, including the River Walkway, and a new route will be created between the River Walkway and Upper Ground on the west side of Sea Containers House.

The refurbished Sea Containers House and new office building creates employment space for around 2,800 new jobs in the office space, hotel, restaurants, cafés and rooftop bar.

2012 work starts on redevelopment which completes in 2014.

Morgans Hotel Group Co. has announced that it has entered into a hotel management agreement for an approximately 360-room Mondrian-branded hotel to be located at Sea Containers House. The hotel is expected to be the 6th Mondrian hotel in the expansion of the Company's iconic brand and the first Mondrian hotel in Europe.

Upon completion and opening of the hotel, Morgans will operate the hotel pursuant to a 25-year management agreement, with two 10-year extension options. The hotel is scheduled to open in early 2014.

"We are very excited to announce our first Mondrian hotel in Europe," said Michael Gross, Chief Executive Officer of Morgans Hotel Group. "Sea Containers is an exceptional property in a key gateway city that will allow us to serve our guests for business and leisure throughout the year. Morgans was specifically selected by the property's owner to develop and manage Mondrian London, which is a testament to the appeal of our lifestyle management and the strength of the Mondrian brand. This is the third new management agreement for a Mondrian-branded hotel that we have announced this year. We believe the Mondrian brand has unique appeal and significant potential for global expansion."

Jonathan Ofer, Managing Director of the Deerbrook Group, the adviser to the owner said, "We conducted a thorough operator selection process and believe Morgans under the Mondrian brand will create a special destination at Sea Containers."

Sea Containers is an approximately 412,000 square foot office building centrally located on the South Bank of the River Thames, close to many cultural attractions as well as business hubs. The owner of Sea Containers intends to renovate the building into a mixed-use development to include a 360-room Mondrian hotel and 280,000 square feet of prime office space. The hotel will have an innovative restaurant and both a ground floor bar and rooftop bar, specially conceived by The Light Group, one of the world's leading food and beverage operators. Morgans intends to invest approximately 9 million pounds, or approximately $15 million, of key money into the project.

Southwark gives go ahead to Sea Containers House Refurbishment.

Archlane Ltd’s proposals to refurbish Sea Containers House have been given the goahead by Southwark Council’s planning committee, it was announced today.

Designed by TP Bennett, the plans will see the extensive external and internal refurbishment of Sea Containers House, including refurbished office spaces and a new, Grade-A modern office building, a high-end 356-bedroom lifestyle destination hotel as well as restaurants and cafés along the River Walkway to reinvigorate the local area.

The plans will also revitalise and open up public areas around the building, including the River Walkway, and a new route will be created between the River Walkway and Upper Ground on the west side of Sea Containers House.

The refurbished Sea Containers House and new office building will create employment space for around 2,800 new jobs in the office space, hotel, restaurants, cafés and rooftop bar. This represents a 16% increase on the number of jobs currently on site. An estimated 500 jobs will also be created during the construction and refurbishment work.

The planning application is now referable to the Mayor of London.

JJ Ofer of Deerbrook Ltd, asset manager for Archlane Ltd, commented:
“We are delighted to have been granted planning permission for the refurbishment of Sea Containers House. It is an important building in a great location on the South Bank. Archlane’s investment will bring Sea Containers House into the 21st century, providing new job opportunities and revitalising the local area.

“As long as the Mayor is happy, we aim to start on site in January 2012, with completion anticipated for first quarter 2014.”
