Overview
55-56 Chamber Street is a mixed-use development comprising of two buildings in London E1.
The site on the corner of Mansell Street and Chamber Street includes a disused railway viaduct, which suffered bomb damage during World War II. The new buildings will comprise an apart-hotel (serviced apartments), office space and public realm improvements.
Designed by Simon Smith and Michael Brooke Architects, the main building is a part 10 and part 11 storey building plus basement, providing 34 serviced apartments and office space on the ground and 1st floor.
The second building, known as the Courtyard Building, contains office space.
Bomb-Damaged Wall
The bomb-damaged wall will be retained, including the cornerstone quoins and 6m of brickwork. The retained wall will be framed with bronze coloured fins and canopy. Memorial writings will be etched in the curtain walling glass next to the wall to provide a dedicated and permanent tribute to people who died and survived the Blitz of World War II.
History
2019 December - Marldon submits a planning application for the redevelopment of the former railway sidings and outbuilding, including demolition of outbuilding, to allow for mixed-use development in two buildings, comprising a part 10, part 11 storey building providing office floorspace (Use Class B1) at ground and first floor and serviced apartments (Use Class C1) on the upper floors and a 2 storey office building (Use Class B1).
