Pre-demolition works started on the Aylesbury Estate as the next phase of the massive 3,900-home regeneration project gets underway, reports Notting Hill Housing.

Work started the week beginning 10 August and is initially being carried out inside the smaller Chartridge blocks in the First Development Site (between Bradenham Close and Portland Street), which are already empty. Keltbray Ltd has been contracted to carry out the initial stages.

Residents who are still living within the site are being kept fully informed of the work taking place and Notting Hill Housing (NHH) has made sure that safe and unrestricted access will be maintained to and from their homes. Emergency services can still reach all areas of the site and waste collection is unaffected.

Security will still be in place to ensure the safety of residents and visitors while works are carried out. There is also a traffic management plan in place to ensure nearby businesses along Westmoreland Road are not affected by the works and that site traffic doesn’t affect people living in the neighbouring Elizabeth Estate.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “Our residents need better quality affordable homes with more open green space and better community facilities. This is the next step in this vitally important project.

The regeneration of the Aylesbury Estate has been discussed for over 15 years and progress is now finally underway on the next phase, our first with partners NHH, with the first steps in the demolition process now happening on site.”

The works begin just a week after planning permission for the Aylesbury Estate regeneration was finalised with the signing of a Section 106 agreement pledging a new health centre, library and almost 2,000 new affordable homes, with 75 percent of the affordable homes let at target (social) rents.

Kate Davies, Chief Executive of NHH, said: “This is another important step forward in the regeneration of the Aylesbury and we are proud to be providing new facilities such as a library and health centre for the benefit of residents within the development area and beyond.

“The agreement also confirms our pledge to provide 50 per cent affordable homes in the regeneration. This will allow us to help existing residents stay within the footprint of the Aylesbury and also provide affordable homes to families who need them.”

The project is due to be completed in 2032.
