Swan Housing Association has confirmed the appointment of the project development team for Phase 2 of the Blackwall Reach Regeneration in Poplar, London E14.

Metropolitan Workshop and Haworth Tompkins have been appointed as joint architects. AKT II and Townshends join the design team for Structural engineering and Landscape design respectively.

Swan, its architects and also its regeneration partners The London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the Greater London Authority, are currently holding public consultation events to shape the designs at the pre-planning application stage.

Following consultation, the designs will be developed to ensure they deliver the highest standards of design and quality in place making prior to submitting a Reserved Matters planning application for Phase 2 (Robin Hood Gardens West) of the Blackwall Reach Regeneration Project.

This large regeneration project will transform a key area of the Borough, adjacent to the Blackwall Tunnel, replacing 252 homes with over 1500 new homes, commercial premises and community facilities. Phase 1A was launched in October 2015 and work has begun on the next phase. The scheme has already scooped the Award for Planning for Housing Growth at the Planning Awards 2015.

Geoff Pearce, Executive Director Regeneration and Development, Swan Housing Group said:

“Metropolitan Workshop have been selected as architects for the next phase of Blackwall Reach because of their track record of delivering high quality urban design and architecture. We appointed Haworth Tompkins as joint architects because we believe they will bring fresh thinking to the project and offer in-depth expertise in residential and mixed use projects and a commitment to the art of making beautiful, sustainable buildings. We are confident these two leading architect’s practices will complement each other’s ideas and produce an inspired and deliverable redevelopment plan for the next phase of the regeneration of Blackwall Reach.”

Neil Deely, Partner, Metropolitan Workshop said:

“We are looking forward to continuing our work with Swan Housing, the GLA, Tower Hamlets and the local community and also our collaboration with Haworth Tompkins to create the best possible place we can to live in Blackwall Reach. We are pleased that the client group has embraced our recommendations for qualitative improvements to the plans.’”

Toby Johnson, Director, Haworth Tompkins said:

“We respect the legacy of the Smithsons and are all too aware of the intellectual challenge involved in working on Blackwall Reach. The new residential buildings should be of the highest design quality and we welcome the opportunity to help achieve this. The appointment of Metropolitan Workshop and our recent appointment to work with them to bring variety to the design of the next phase of the redevelopment plan demonstrates the partners commitment to design quality and we are looking forward to working with them on this challenging project.”
