Careys Civil Engineering is helping to transform the face of Battersea, London by contributing to the monumental One Nine Elms project.
They are delivering substructure works for the development’s 43-storey River Tower and 56-storey City Tower, due to become one of the tallest residential skyscrapers in Europe.
Careys Civil Engineering was appointed by principal contractor, Multiplex, to construct the three-level basements at both buildings – using the innovative top-down construction method. Currently, we are operating 12m below ground level, delivering level-two excavation services from the River Tower towards the City Tower.
Despite the challenges presented by this project, Careys have achieved major milestones, such as successfully completing the repair of the 1.6m diameter Victorian brick sewer with a 70m steel liner, after months of planning and delivery.
This year, the team will carry out two 4,000m3 concrete pours for the foundations of both towers.

Mark Dorman, Head of London Residential Development and Investment at Strutt & Parker, commented:
“Nine Elms has many exciting developments due to be delivered over the next few years, and what has been a primarily industrial area is about to change. However, One Nine Elms will set a new standard not only for the immediate area but for London.
“Dalian Wanda has an outstanding brand which is synonymous with luxury, service and design. This development will combine all of these and will have some of the best views in London. It really is exciting, and we are delighted to be appointed.”
Luke Mills, Executive Director at CBRE Residential, commented:
“London’s Southbank is arguably one of the most exciting property stories this decade and in the hands of Dalian Wanda the One Nine Elms development is perfectly poised to capitalise on the increasing sentiment for high-quality new-build development with impeccable services and amenities.
“This development’s close proximity to the City and West End provides a rare opportunity in which homebuyers can purchase a new home, with both river and London skyline views, in a formerly under-utilised region which is expected to enjoy record growth both in population and property values.”
