The high reach excavator begins to dismantle Murchison House, working towards Wells House.
It will take about 8 weeks to demolish Wells House and Murchison House.
The demolition of Murchison and Wells Houses will straighten the road linking Portobello Road and Wornington Road. This will create a new road called Murchison Gardens.
In the long run, Murchison Gardens will improve wayfinding and safety in the area, and help knit the development into the existing street pattern.

United Living will be Catalyst's construction partner on Phase 2A of Portobello Square.
The design and build contract will include an option to be extended to include Phase 2B.
Designed by Conran + Partners from PRP Architects’ Masterplan, Phase 2A of Portobello Square will deliver 91 new homes (60 at social rent and 31 for private sale). Demolition of the existing buildings is well underway and construction will begin on site in July 2017, with handovers expected to be complete by spring 2019.
Portobello Square will deliver about 1,000 new homes, over 3,000sqm of commercial space and 9,000sqm of public space. Catalyst will be re-providing social rented housing for all of the current residents as well as developing homes for sale and shared ownership. The neighbourhood has been designed to reconnect the community to the surrounding areas by reproducing the original street pattern from the early 20th century.
Tom Titherington, Executive Director of Property & Growth, commented: “We worked closely with our residents to ensure that we made the right decision and I am delighted that we will be working with United Living on the next phase of construction.

The first stage of Phase 2 begins in November 2016, this involves the demolition of Edward Kennedy House, 65 to 96 Pepler House and 192 and 194 Wornington Road to clear the site ready for construction of Bond Mansions.
Demolition will last for approximately 6 months and will be undertaken by Erith.
Bond Mansions is the first building to be built In Phase 2. Other buildings that will be built during this phase are: Dickens Mansions, Valentin Mansions and Eliot Mansions.
We will appoint a new construction contractor for Phase 2. The Residents’ Steering Group has been actively involved in the selection process.
Completion of new roads, Bonchurch Road and Athlone Place, which will help reconnect the surrounding neighbourhood. New roads finished and handed back to the Council to manage (Faraday Road will not be completed until the Venture Centre has moved).
The finishing touches to Hardy Mansions will mark the final completion of all new homes in Phase 1. Hudson Mansions, Orwell Mansions, Munro Mews and half of the townhouses are all occupied.
The shops and offices along Portobello Road will be completed. These will be used initially for the new Marketing Suite and Show Home.
