The Development

Formerly known as McArthur's Warehouse and the former headquarters of the Bristol-based metal merchant McArthur's Group, founded in the 1860s, the site is undergoing a transformation. Once a malt house, the building had fallen into disrepair and was forgotten for over two decades. However, it is now set to become a beacon of sustainable building development for Bristol residents.

Sustainability was at the forefront of the McArthur's Yard project, with a significant focus on reusing existing materials. Two-thirds of the original wall were retained and structurally reinforced for longevity, while Bath Stone slabs and grey stone setts were recycled and implemented along the side entrance of Block A, providing a nod to the development's historic legacy.

The site's ecological footprint was also considered, with bird and bat boxes included in the landscaping, and swift-friendly bricks added along the graving dockside, welcoming new residents to the area. Notably, McArthur's Yard boasts a unique feature in the form of Welsh blue pennant kerb laid at the front of the site, coupled with blue-grey drag-faced clay setts running from Block A down and around the famous graving dock, adding a charming contrast of old cobbled streets and new-build modern architecture.
