Southwark gives go ahead to Sea Containers House Refurbishment.

Archlane Ltd’s proposals to refurbish Sea Containers House have been given the goahead by Southwark Council’s planning committee, it was announced today.

Designed by TP Bennett, the plans will see the extensive external and internal refurbishment of Sea Containers House, including refurbished office spaces and a new, Grade-A modern office building, a high-end 356-bedroom lifestyle destination hotel as well as restaurants and cafés along the River Walkway to reinvigorate the local area.

The plans will also revitalise and open up public areas around the building, including the River Walkway, and a new route will be created between the River Walkway and Upper Ground on the west side of Sea Containers House.

The refurbished Sea Containers House and new office building will create employment space for around 2,800 new jobs in the office space, hotel, restaurants, cafés and rooftop bar. This represents a 16% increase on the number of jobs currently on site. An estimated 500 jobs will also be created during the construction and refurbishment work.

The planning application is now referable to the Mayor of London.

JJ Ofer of Deerbrook Ltd, asset manager for Archlane Ltd, commented:
“We are delighted to have been granted planning permission for the refurbishment of Sea Containers House. It is an important building in a great location on the South Bank. Archlane’s investment will bring Sea Containers House into the 21st century, providing new job opportunities and revitalising the local area.

“As long as the Mayor is happy, we aim to start on site in January 2012, with completion anticipated for first quarter 2014.”
