London Square Putney

London Square Putney will transform two under-occupied 1960s office blocks into a landmark new scheme that will enliven this bustling stretch of Upper Richmond Road, SW15.

Composed of a cascading series of levels sitting atop a retail and office space podium, the development will provide over 47,000 sq ft of flexible retail and office space at ground and first floor level, 113 double-aspect apartments with an array of balconies, wintergardens and terraces.

With projects such as Google’s new offices at King’s Cross and the redevelopment of the BBC Television Centre in their portfolio, AHMM is renowned for creating innovative and aesthetically striking new buildings, designed to be recognised as some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks in the future. AHMM also delivered the award-winning London Square Leonard Street, EC2 – a cool development of apartments designed with sleek brick and stone façades to blend with the urban Shoreditch vernacular.

The façades at London Square Putney will be predominantly brick-clad, creating a subtle texture from three different brick motifs used strategically on panels around the building. The motif is designed to reflect the large stepped scale of the building’s alternating balconies, winter gardens and terraces, and is used as a striking way of differentiating the commercial space from the residential – while complimenting the local architectural style. A separate double height commercial entrance will feature striking deep window reveals, with a glazed brick wall featured at the residential entrance to ensure they remain distinct.

The new public square, which AHMM is creating at London Square Putney, is designed to offer a ‘break-out’ space along the Upper Richmond Road and act as a backdrop for the new retail and office units. Seating sections and planting zones will be installed, with a special surface treatment, known as ‘art paving’, applied to the square’s pavement, highlighting the square to draw visitors into the space.

The scheme will also incorporate a new south-facing private landscaped garden for residents, and separate reception and concierge lobby area. The communal roof gardens, at six storeys high, will provide additional communal outside space, where residents can enjoy views of the London cityscape.

Rebecca Littler, Sales & Marketing Director of London Square comments: “London is world famous for its architectural heritage and innovation and we are delighted that London Square Putney is going to add further value to the capital’s reputation in this field. The variation in elevations, depths and materials means that the building will be aesthetically unique and present a different view from each angle. In addition to offering stylish residential units, the new plaza will provide a contemporary public space in the heart of Putney, contributing to the area’s vibrancy and appeal.”

James Santer, an architect and Associate Director at Allford Hall Monaghan Morris comments: “We have sought to create a building which contributes to the value of the local architectural offering – a similar approach to our designs for London Square Leonard Street. At London Square Putney, we had the added challenge of creating a design that ensured the commercial and residential spaces both integrate aesthetically while simultaneously remaining distinct.”
