Six-storey Georgian townhouse with Beatles connection up for sale in Mayfair

23/10/2023 by Buildington

A historic Grade II listed Georgian townhouse on Charles Street in Mayfair, originally built in the 1750s, is up for sale.

This five-bedroom property, spanning almost 3,800 sq ft, once served as the home and later the office of the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, in the 1960s. The townhouse's mews house was used as a covert hideaway for the Beatles, allowing them to evade fervent fans. This mews house also has significance as a place where the band is believed to have worked on their iconic 1967 album, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. After Epstein's death in 1967, the property was owned by Conservative politician Norman St John-Stevas, who was known for his flamboyant style and was a close advisor to Margaret Thatcher.

The six-storey townhouse was originally developed by aristocratic landowner Lord Berkeley, and designed by the master carpenter John Phillips.

The house has a main Charles Street façade of brown brick and stucco, with a slate roof, sash windows, and wrought-iron railings at street level.

The main building and the 'Beatles mews' on Hays Mews were sold separately but have been reunited by the current owner. The property is now on the market through Mayfair specialists, Wetherell.

The interiors of the grand living spaces feature parquet flooring, fireplaces, plaster panelling, cornicing and gilded ceiling motifs. The elaborate plasterwork, notably in the drawing room, is Georgian and of the highest workmanship.

The main home comprises a lower ground floor with a huge reception space, study area, and home office, plus a utility room. There is a further light-filled reception and kitchen on the ground floor, opening onto a large patio courtyard.

On the first floor, there is a salon with a green fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows with access onto a balcony, and on the second floor the magnificent principal bedroom suite, leading onto a roof terrace.

There are three further ensuite bedrooms on the third and fourth floors.

Peter Wetherell, Founder and Executive Chairman of Wetherell, commented: “This Charles Street townhouse and mews was the Mayfair base of two famous showmen, firstly Beatles manager Brian Epstein, who allowed the Fab Four used the mews as their bolthole, and later Norman St John-Stevas, one of British politics’ most colourful characters. It is extremely rare to find a Grade II listed townhouse in the heart of Mayfair that has not only retained so many wonderful traditional Georgian features, but comes with its original mews house intact and several private outdoor spaces.”

The Charles Street townhouse and mews is available for sale freehold for £8,750,000. For more information or to arrange a viewing, contact Wetherell on Tel: +44 20 7529 7566.
