In 1880, the Metropolitan opened a line across the estate. Its chairman, the Victorian magnate Sir Edward Watkin, bought the rest of Wembley Park in 1889. His vision is to create a pleasure ground for Londoners and to develop homes in the countryside, from which people can commute to work "in town" on his railway.
