Mace has been appointed as construction manager for the Battersea Power Station Preliminary Works. Mace will manage the trade contractors who will undertake the £100m works package which comprises brick repairs to the elevations, the repairs to the four wash towers, and the dismantling and reconstructing of the chimneys.

The Preliminary Works will start in October 2013, with the dismantling of the first chimney expected to begin in February 2014.

Rob Tincknell, CEO of Battersea Power Station Development Company, said: “The restoration of the Power Station is at the heart of this entire redevelopment and we are delighted that this vital work is now getting underway. The appointment of Mace, which has an excellent record in historic and specialised buildings, will ensure that Gilbert Scott’s masterpiece is in safe hands and that all the constructors working on its restoration are pulling together so that we can finally refurbish it and open it up to the public.”

Stephen Pycroft, Executive Chairman of Mace commented: “I am delighted that we have been given the opportunity to work on such an important project. The Power Station has been a landmark on the London skyline for many decades and our priority is to ensure that it remains a landmark for many more decades to come.”

Mace will work on the preliminary repair works as part of a team of expert contractors and consultants, all of which are leading companies in their respective fields with extensive experience of landmark projects such as Battersea Power Station. They include Buro Happold, Purcell, Turner & Townsend and Gardiner & Theobald.

The shell and core works of the Power Station, currently being designed by Wilkinson Eyre, will be tendered during 2014 with a planned start on site date of March 2015.
