Aurelia

The second phase of Aurelia will be unveiled by English Cities Fund (ECf) in 2015.

Designed by CZWG Architects LLP, ‘Aurelia’ comprises two connected public spaces at the heart of the overall Rathbone Market Development: a redefined market square and a new space welcoming the exit from an existing subway which runs beneath the A13 to the south of the site.

Adam West, Parter at CZWG said:

“Whilst Phase One, ‘Vermilion’, was all about a sleek metal skin reaching for the sky, Phase Two ‘Aurelia’ is concerned with connecting to the ground, bringing people up and into the development from the subway and providing a robust setting for the activities of the market. Angular geometric masses clearly define the new Rathbone Market with three buildings providing 165 new homes, while facilities for the market traders, retail units and community spaces for Newham Council bring activity to the ground floor to supplement the market activities. The glazed terracotta rainscreen cladding in shades of deep orange complements the striking silver grey and red aluminium cladding of the neighbouring ‘Vermilion’ tower, bringing a hint of Mediterranean sunshine to Canning Town on even the gloomiest of days.”
Duncan Cumberland, Development Director for ECf, said:

“Rathbone Market is an enormously important development not only for the people of Canning Town but for the whole of the East End. Together, we’re changing things, creating an attractive and vibrant new town centre which will improve life for those who live here and boost the local economy by drawing in newcomers. The energy of Aurelia’s colour scheme really shows the confidence in Canning Town and will put it on the map as a destination for both businesses and homebuyers.”
ECf’s Rathbone Market scheme is one of a number of projects which will see a combined £3.7billion invested into Canning Town and Custom House regeneration programme over the next 10 years delivering 10,000 new homes and 5,000 new jobs.

Phase Two of the £180m Rathbone Market regeneration programme, ‘Aurelia at Vermilion’ comprises 123 privately-sold homes and a further 42 homes for shared ownership through Notting Hill Housing.

ECf – a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal and General Property and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has also delivered 12,000 sq ft of retail space, a new community building and two public squares — including a new high quality Market Square which will be the permanent home for Rathbone Market.
