First stage of Greenwich Square has been completed.

London’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Land, Richard Blakeway, attended the celebrations with Hadley Mace (the joint venture between Mace and Hadley Property Group), at which he praised the excellent public facilities that will be a feature of the development.

The £225m regeneration of the former Greenwich District Hospital site is being developed in partnership with the Greater London Authority, Royal Borough of Greenwich, the NHS and L&Q housing association.

The site also includes a variety of health and leisure services at the Greenwich Centre, which provides a new community facility at the heart of the development.

Of the 645 new homes at Greenwich Square, this debut phase celebrates the completion of 95 private sale apartments with residents already starting to move in. Also included in the milestone is the completion of 88 shared ownership and 138 social rent apartments offered through L&Q. Upon completion of phase two, Greenwich Square will provide a total of 144 shared ownership units and 170 social rent apartments together making up almost 50% of the total residential offering.

In addition to the new homes, the development’s public square is also now complete with retailers such as Sainsbury’s already moved in. Further adding to the ‘village’ appeal of the development, other retailers confirmed include Day Lewis Pharmacy and The Curious Comb - an award winning salon currently based in nearby Blackheath.

Deputy Mayor for Housing and Land Richard Blakeway said: “It has taken years of hard work to help regenerate and transform Greenwich Square from unused GLA land to a much-needed housing development with excellent public facilities. We need to rapidly unlock more of the capital’s brownfield land opportunities that have capacity to yield half a million new homes over the next decade. That is why we’re delivering 20 new housing zones to bring forward enormous regeneration and infrastructure to boost supply, and produce the thousands of extra homes London desperately needs.”

David Grover, Director of Hadley Mace said: “The completion of this phase of the development is a significant achievement for Greenwich Square and we are well on track to deliver the remainder of the homes by 2017. Already we can see the change the development has brought to the local area. With many residents now moving in, the Greenwich Centre open for business and retail units open, there’s a strong sense of community and vibrancy that will only continue to build.”
