Renowned pop artist Peter R. Mason used over 30,000 postage stamps to create the 20ft artwork in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Whiteleys’ centenary year.

Artist Peter Mason, renowned for his portraits of A-list celebrities and politicians, used thousands of recycled stamps to re-create the iconic Machin Stamp portrait.

Peter, who references Pop Art and graphics in his practice, uses the stamps as pixels in a larger image. Scale is paramount in viewing and understanding Peter’s work as he chooses to use postage stamps and place them so that their usual significance becomes obscure, enabling the audience to see ‘art’ with new eyes.

The artwork took over 400 hours to complete and was unveiled by Peter on 25 May 2012 in the Central Atrium.
