Description of Corbridge Crescent

Corbridge Crescent is a mixed-use development of commercial space and residential apartments in Bethnal Green, London E2.

The scheme will create 1, 2 and 3 bedroom warehouse-style apartments and 7,000 sqft of new commercial space fronting the Regents Canal.

Also known as Empress Coachworks.

The site is located on Corbridge Crescent and is bounded to the north by the Regent’s Canal and to the east by the Great Eastern Railway line.


The site has been used for industrial purposes, including a mill and glass bottle factory in the past.

2020 February - Work starts on site.

2018 April - Planning permission granted for the redevelopment.

2016 - Amended development: Demolition of existing single storey commercial buildings, with the retention, restoration, external alteration and residential conversion of the existing Regency and Victorian Cottages, together with the erection of three linked blocks of 4, 5 and 8 storeys to provide 51 residential dwellings (Use Class C3), with associated private and communal amenity space, cycle parking and refuse storage, and 461sqm of dual-use office/community floorspace (Use Class B1/D1). Tower Hamlets ref. no PA/16/03773.

The demolition and remediation works are nearing completion at the former Empress Coachworks site in Bethnal Green, reports Aitch Group.

Empress Works will be home to 56 1, 2 & 3 bedroom warehouse-style apartments and 7,000 sqft of new commercial space, with frontage on the Regents Canal.

The development also includes the sensitive rebuilding and reusing of the existing Regency and Victorian cottages.

Construction will start this Summer, with reservations in 2020, and completion in Q2 2021.

CMA Planning has secured permission at appeal at The Oval in Tower Hamlets on behalf of Aitch Group.

Following a Hearing in March, the Inspector concluded that the comprehensive redevelopment of the site, including the retention and refurbishment of Victorian and Regency cottages with a scheme which reflected and respected the industrial heritage of the area should be given the go-ahead.
