The Goring
Key Details
Overview
The Goring hotel building is moments from Buckingham Palace grounds in Westminster, London SW1.
The Goring was built in 1910 by Otto Richard Goring, a successful German businessman from the brewing industry. The hotel was designed by architect Ernest George, who has also designed the Royal Academy of Music on Marylebone Road. The hotel was built on land that once housed a public house and several cottages.
The Goring was the first hotel in the world to offer en suite bathrooms and central heating in all its rooms and was among the first to include a lift. The hotel quickly gained favour with the royal family and high society.
Over its history, the Edwardian hotel has hosted significant events. In 1914, the Chief of Allied Forces used it as their headquarters during World War I.
