Overview

17-22 South Audley Street is a mixed-use development by Artfarm and Hauser & Wirth in Mayfair, London W1.

The Grade II* listed Victorian building will be the new flagship gallery for Hauser & Wirth in Mayfair, complementing the existing location at 23 Savile Row.

This new 15,000 sq ft home for art and artists will be on the lower floors of the Goode Building. Hauser & Wirth will occupy practically the entire ground and lower ground floor for art gallery uses open to the public. Hauser & Wirth Editions print shop is situated on the corner of South Audley Street. Delivery access for the gallery and general service access for the building is to be via a new gated entrance courtyard on South Street.

The lower ground floor contains a space for art storage as well as meeting rooms and offices for the gallery and back-of-house areas.

The floors above ground floor level contain accommodation organised around a new landscaped courtyard.

Five permanent residential apartments are located in the southwest corner of the building with a separate staircase and Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant lift. Eleven visitor accommodation units are reached from entrances on Chapel Place and South Street.

The architectural conversion is designed by Luis Laplace in collaboration with London-based Timothy Hatton Architects.

History

The building was originally conceived to display the fine china and glassware of Thomas Goode and Company in 1845. Many of the distinctive architectural and interior details that give the space its special character will be preserved, including double-height vaulted rooms with clearstory skylights and intricate cornices. The façade of the building will retain the existing red brick elevations, including the continuous windows running around a ground-floor colonnade.

Originally constructed in 1845 but rebuilt to designs by Ernest George and Peto architects between 1875 and 1876.

Thomas Goode vacated the building in 2021.
