The Silk District development in Whitechapel, London E1, is launching today! Let’s take a quick look at the facts:

  • What: New mixed-use development on 3.5-acre former Safestore storage facility Whitechapel Central;
  • Where: Site bound by Raven Row, Stepney Way Sidney Street in Whitechapel, London E1 2EN; In the London Borough of Tower Hamlets;
  • Who: A development by L&Q and Mount Anvil. Designed by Stockwool architects.
  • Why is it called The Silk District? In the 17th-century the Huguenots, who had to flee France, brought along the skills of silk-weaving and set up shop here in this area of East London. Before that, you couldn’t buy silk in England.
  • Buildings: Three blocks ranging from 4 to 25 storeys;
  • Architecture: predominantly brick and reconstituted stone, glass and aluminium-clad tower.
  • Flats: 620 apartments, of which 152 will be affordable housing and the rest for private sale;
  • Flat types: Studio, 1, 2 & 3-bedroom apartments;
  • Silk Tapestry: Finnish artist Kustaa Saksi has been commissioned to create some silk tapestry for the building;
  • Kitchen: Comes with fully fitted kitchen and integrated SMEG appliances;
  • Prices: starting from £445,000 for the 100 apartments launched in Phase 1 on Thursday April 5th 2018;
  • Parking: 70 car parking spaces;
  • Amenities: Gym, 24h concierge, cinema room, ground and rooftop landscaped gardens.
  • Commercial Space: The scheme includes 3,500sqm of commercial space for flexible office space, shops, a gym and a cafe.
  • Public Realm: 30% of the site dedicated to new public realm; new public square and walkways through the site.
  • Transport: 450 metres from Whitechapel Station (Crossrail coming soon);
