Top 10 London Landscape Architects May 2019

Seeing as this year’s Chelsea Flower Show is almost upon us, it would be inappropriate not to take a closer look at the most popular London Landscape Architects on Buildington today.

The ranking is based on the popularity of their projects right now, so by the time we publish this, the top #10 in our interactive directory might have already changed.

1. Gustafson Porter + Bowman & their most popular project Chelsea Barracks SW1

Qatari Diar has chosen the author of the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, to design the green courtyards in one of the most popular developments in London at the moment. You might recognise the firm’s handwriting at Facebook’s famous Rathbone Square (2017; photo) and Lincoln Square (2019).

2. Townshend Landscape Architects & Southbank Place SE1

Southbank Place by Canary Wharf Group by the River Thames is now almost complete. The development includes a prominent piazza and collection of public squares. Another hot project they are working on is The Dumont SE1 (2020) by Berkeley.

3. Gillespies & Television Centre W12

The Television Centre’s famous forecourt and Helios Plaza have been reinvented by Gillespies. The new public realm within this landmark complex of national importance consists of beautiful walkways lined with trees and planting, plenty of seating and places for outdoor activity. The firm is well known for its work at SkyGarden at 20 Fenchurch Street EC3 (2014).

4. Exterior Architecture & Battersea Power Station SW8

Exterior Architecture has done some good work on public realm spaces around two new residential buildings, the new walk by the Thames, residential gardens located on podiums and creation of the ‘Halo’ around the Battersea Power Station site. The firm is also working on Holloway Prison N7, Quay House E14 and Elizabeth House SE1.

5. Farrer Huxley Associates & Landmark Pinnacle E14

Farrer Huxley Associates has designed the green spaces inside and outside Chalegrove‘s 75-storey tower, including the private gardens on the 27th-floor. Other notable projects include Woodside Square N10 (2017) and the roof terrace at 30 Broadwick Street W1 (2016).

6. Spacehub & 34-38 Wallis Road E9

Spacehub prepared the landscaping plans for this new exciting hotel at 34-38 Wallis Road in the hip Hackney Wick area. The firm has also designed the setting at Hanover Bond W1 (2021), the new collaboration between Clivedale and Mandarin Oriental in Mayfair.

7. Randle Siddeley & Vista SW8

Randle Siddeley is responsible for the green setting at Vista next to Battersea Park, developed by Berkeley. The firm has also worked at Chelsea Waterfront 2019 and if you’ve been to SushiSamba on top of the Salesforce Tower EC3, you would have noticed their orange tree on the west terrace.

8. BBUK & White Collar Factory EC1

BBUK created the courtyard spaces at the popular White Collar Factory office development at Old Street roundabout. They have also designed landscaping for Acton Gardens W3 development in South Acton.

9. Todd Longstaffe Gowan & Kensington Palace W8

Todd Longstaffe Gowan had the honour of redesigning the landscaping around Kensington Palace just before the 2012 Olympic Games. They are currently working on Cundy Street Quarter SW1 development with Grosvenor.

10. Andy Sturgeon & 21 Moorfields EC2

Andy Sturgeon drew the plans for the walkways, bridges, a new city garden and roof terraces at Deutsche Bank‘s future HQ at 21 Moorfields (2021) in the City of London. Other well-known projects include Lillie Square SW6 (2021) and St John’s Wood Square NW8 (2022).
